Luxury laundry gets less attention than luxury kitchens, and it is the category most local shops quietly avoid. A European front loader has a different suspension design, a different door lock scheme, a different drain layout and frequently a different power supply from the American machines most technicians see every day.
What usually fails
On the washer, the drain circuit leads the list by a wide margin. Coins, underwire, hair pins and grit end up in the drain filter or past it into the pump impeller. The symptom is a cycle that stops mid-program with the door locked and water in the tub, because the control will not release the lock while it senses water. That is designed behavior, not a fault.
Suspension is second. Shock absorbers are consumables — they lose damping over years, and once they do, an unbalanced load throws the tub into the cabinet. Left long enough, that abuse is what actually kills the drum bearings. Replacing worn dampers early is one of the few genuinely preventive repairs in laundry.
Door locks fail third. The interlock is both a safety device and a cycle-start permission, so a failing lock presents as a machine that simply refuses to begin, with no other symptom at all.
On the dryer, the split is between vented and ventless. A vented dryer that will not heat is a heating element, a thermal cutout or a restricted duct — and a restricted duct is the cause of a surprising share of failed elements, because the machine overheats itself repeatedly until the cutout gives up. A ventless condenser or heat pump dryer does not have a duct to blame. Instead it depends on a heat exchanger that lint slowly blinds, and the failure mode is not “no heat” but “very long cycles.” Owners often assume the machine is dying when the condenser block has simply never been cleaned.
Moisture sensor bars are the other quiet one. Fabric softener leaves a film across the sensor strips inside the drum, the control reads the load as dry when it is not, and the cycle ends early.
How we diagnose it
We read the model and serial plate first — usually inside the door frame or on the rear panel — then confirm the supply, because a 240-volt machine on a compromised circuit produces symptoms that look mechanical and are not.
For a washer we run the pump and the lock independently, check the drain path from the filter through the hose to the standpipe, and load the drum by hand to feel bearing play and damper resistance before any part is quoted. Bearing wear you can feel; damper wear you can hear and see in the spin.
For a dryer we measure airflow at the outlet on vented machines and check the full duct run to the exterior wall. On ventless machines we open the condenser and inspect the exchanger and the lower filter chamber first, then check the sensor bars, the thermistors and the drum seal.
What the repair involves
Laundry rooms are tight, and in many of the homes we work in they have stone floors, custom cabinetry above and a paneled or stacked installation. We protect the floor, unstack where the job requires it, and pull the machine out on protection rather than dragging it.
Pumps, filters, locks, valves, sensor bars and dryer elements are front or rear access and normally a single visit. Shock absorbers and springs are a lower-panel job. Drum bearings are the big one: the cabinet comes apart, the tub is split, and the shaft and seal seat get inspected before new bearings go in. It is a half-day repair on the right machine and we quote it honestly, including the possibility that the shaft is already scored.
When it is worth repairing
The test we use is simple. If the cabinet, drum and control are sound and the failure is a pump, a lock, a valve, a damper, an element or a sensor, repair is straightforward economics. If the drum bearing has failed on a machine already past fifteen years and the shaft is damaged, that is the point where replacement deserves a serious look.
