# Panel-Ready Refrigerator Door Not Sealing Properly?

Integrated doors fail to seal for reasons a standard refrigerator never has: panel weight, hinge shim, cabinet square and clearance. How to find which.

## Integrated doors have failure modes ordinary refrigerators do not

A freestanding refrigerator hangs a light steel door on a heavy steel cabinet, and it does that in free air where nothing else touches it. A panel-ready or fully integrated unit does something considerably harder: it hangs a custom cabinet door - sometimes solid timber, occasionally stone or metal-faced - on the same hinge, inside an opening built by a different trade, with three to five millimetres of clearance to the doors either side.

That is why "the door is not sealing" on an integrated unit is rarely a gasket problem, even though the gasket is what you can see failing. Most of the time the gasket is the messenger.

There are five real causes, and they are worth separating before anybody starts turning screws.

## The five causes, in the order they occur

**1. Panel mass beyond what the hinge was set for.** Manufacturers publish a maximum panel weight for each door, and it is a real engineering limit rather than a suggestion. A five-piece solid maple panel with a heavy pull is very different from a flat MDF panel with a veneer. Exceed the limit and the hinge sags, the top of the door tilts outward, and the seal opens along the top edge on the handle side - the single most common leak pattern we find.

**2. The cabinet opening is not square.** Kitchens settle. Slabs move. A rough opening that was square at install can be a few millimetres out five years later, and the door will follow the hinge, not the opening. If the reveal above the door is 3mm on one side and 6mm on the other, the appliance is telling you where to look.

**3. The unit is level to the floor instead of to the run.** Levelling legs were designed to bring the cabinet plumb, and on a floor with any fall - which describes a lot of the 1900s to 1930s housing stock in Riverside, Avondale, Old Ortega, San Marco and Old Mandarin - "level to the floor" and "plumb in the opening" are not the same instruction.

**4. Clearance the specification asked for that the cabinetry did not give.** Filler strips, crown moulding returns, a countertop with a deep overhang, or an adjacent door with a thicker profile than planned. The door contacts something on the way home, stops a hair short, and never compresses the gasket. This is also where a blocked air grille comes from, and a suffocated machine compartment is a much more expensive fault than a seal.

**5. The gasket itself.** Torn, hardened, crushed flat after years of a bin pressing on it, or contaminated with sticky residue that stops it seating. Genuine, and genuinely the least common of the five.

## Read the leak pattern

The pattern tells you which of the five you are in far more reliably than a visual inspection.

## Humidity here is not a footnote

Jacksonville summer air routinely sits in the seventy to ninety percent relative humidity range for months. That changes the arithmetic on a marginal seal in two ways.

First, every cubic foot of room air that leaks into the cabinet carries far more water than it would in a dry climate, and that water condenses and freezes on the evaporator. A gap small enough to be invisible can put a coil into a defrost cycle it cannot win, and the visible outcome - ice on the back panel, a compartment drifting warm, a compressor that never stops - looks nothing like a door problem.

Second, the condensation ends up on the outside too. Sweating on the cabinet stile beside a built-in, a dark line along the bottom of an adjacent door, or a swollen panel edge are all signs that a seal has been leaking for a while. Timber panels also move with the seasons, which is why a door that fitted correctly in winter can start binding in August. If your problem is seasonal, that is the mechanism.

On the coast - 32082, 32250, 32266, 32233 and 32084 - add salt to that air. Hinge pins, hinge springs and door switch contacts corrode faster within a few blocks of the ocean than they do inland, and a stiff hinge produces the same symptom as a sagging one.

## Adjusting a hinge without making it worse

If the checks above point at the hinge, change one thing at a time.

Integrated hinges generally offer three adjustments: height, in-and-out depth, and lateral position, usually at the bracket that carries the panel and often with a shim stack behind the hinge plate. Support the door before you loosen anything - a heavy panel dropping ten millimetres while you are holding a driver is how doors get damaged and fingers get hurt.

Move in small increments, a millimetre or so at a time. Retighten fully. Close the door and re-run the dollar bill test all the way round, not just at the spot you were chasing. Correcting a leak at the top corner by pulling the whole door inward will very often open a new leak at the bottom hinge side, and if you have changed two axes at once you will have no idea which move did it.

Write down the reveal measurements before you start. It is the only way to know whether you have actually improved anything.

## When it is not a job for a driver and a level

Some of these do not come back with adjustment, and it is worth knowing before you spend an afternoon on it.

Call for service if the hinge itself is damaged, if the closing cam no longer pulls the door home, if the door has dropped more than a few millimetres, if the alarm continues after the seal is verifiably good, or if there is already ice on the rear panel of the compartment or water pooling in the base. Ice means the leak has been running long enough to change how the unit cools, and the seal repair is now only half the job.

And if the specification sheet says the rough opening should be wider than what the cabinetry gives you, no hinge adjustment will fix that. We will measure it, document it, and tell you exactly what has to change so you are not paying twice.

## Procedure

1. **Map the leak with a dollar bill before you adjust anything** — Close the door on a bill at eight or ten points around the whole perimeter and pull it out at each one. Mark where it slides free. A leak along one full edge, a leak only at the top corner on the handle side, and leaks scattered randomly all point at different causes, and adjusting a hinge before you know the pattern usually makes things worse.
2. **Check the reveal gaps against the neighbouring cabinet doors** — Stand back and look at the gap between the appliance panel and the cabinet doors above and beside it. A reveal that is even at the top and tight at the bottom on one side means the door is hanging out of square, not that the gasket has failed. Measure the gap at the top and bottom of each vertical edge and write both numbers down.
3. **Confirm the appliance itself is level and plumb** — Put a short level on the top edge of the cabinet front and on the floor of the compartment, front to back and side to side. A built-in that has settled - or that was levelled to a floor rather than to the cabinet run - will never seal evenly no matter what you do to the hinges. Adjust the levelling legs before you touch the door.
   Warning: A full-size built-in weighs several hundred pounds with the panel on. Do not attempt to shift or tip one on your own, and never work under a unit supported only by its levelling legs.
4. **Look for a magnet that has been beaten by the panel** — Integrated gaskets rely on a magnetic strip pulling the door closed over the last few millimetres. A heavy solid-wood or stone-faced panel can be more than that magnet was specified for. If the door closes fully when you push it home by hand but drifts back open when you let it swing, the closing force is losing to the panel weight, not the gasket.
5. **Warm and reshape a gasket that has taken a set** — A gasket that has been crushed flat in one area, or that has curled at a corner, can often be brought back. Run a hair dryer on low along that section for a minute or two until the material is warm and pliable, then work it back into shape with your fingers and hold it briefly. Wipe the whole gasket and the mating surface with warm water and mild soap first - sticky residue in the channel stops it seating.
6. **Check the clearances the manufacturer actually specified** — Pull the specification sheet for your model and compare the rough opening, the required top clearance and the required air gap at the grille against what the cabinetry actually gives you. A door binding on a filler strip, a crown moulding, or a countertop overhang is a cabinetry problem that presents exactly like a hinge problem.
7. **Adjust the hinge only once everything above checks out** — Most integrated hinges provide height, depth and lateral adjustment at the bracket, and many use a shim stack behind the hinge plate. Loosen, move in small increments, retighten, then re-run the dollar bill test around the whole perimeter. Change one axis at a time and re-test, or you will lose track of what improved and what did not.

## Questions people ask

**Why do panel-ready doors go out of alignment more than ordinary ones?**

Because you have hung a custom cabinet door on an appliance hinge and asked it to compress a magnetic gasket. The panel adds weight and moves the centre of gravity forward, which multiplies the load on the hinge and on the mounting hardware. Wood panels also move seasonally, and a panel that fitted perfectly in a dry January can bind against a filler strip in an August that runs near ninety percent humidity.

**Is a small gap really worth fixing?**

Yes, and quickly. A gap you can barely see lets a continuous stream of humid room air into the compartment, which loads the evaporator with ice, drives the compressor to run far longer than it should, and eventually shows up as a warm compartment. It also puts moisture into the surrounding cabinetry, and swollen or delaminated cabinet ends beside a refrigerator are much more expensive than a gasket.

**The door alarm keeps sounding but the door looks shut. What is going on?**

The alarm is usually triggered by a reed switch, a magnet, or a plunger switch that is being held slightly open by the door position. If the door is closing to within a millimetre or two of home but not compressing the gasket fully, the switch never registers a closed door. That is the same alignment problem the gasket is telling you about, from a second sensor.

**Can I replace the gasket myself?**

Often yes. Most integrated gaskets are a press-in dart in a channel or are held by a retaining strip behind a row of screws, and a replacement supplied for your specific model comes moulded to shape. Fit it at room temperature, seat the corners first, and expect it to need a day or two to fully relax into position. What you should not do is fit a universal gasket cut to length - the corner geometry is what seals.

**Should the door swing shut on its own?**

On most built-ins the hinge is cammed so that the door self-closes over the last several degrees of travel, and it should do that with the custom panel fitted. If it stalls, hangs at an angle, or bounces back open, either the unit is not plumb, the hinge needs adjustment, or the panel is heavier than the hardware was set up for. A door that needs a shove every time will eventually be left open by somebody.

**Do you handle the cabinetry side as well?**
